Franka presented METR at the "meet the industry", a conference by Medianet Berlin Brandenburg and the IoT-Hub. This year, the focus was on companies that solve customers' problems using the Internet of Things (IoT). Representatives of startups and medium-sized companies presented use cases that are already being evaluated and tested on the market. Representatives from the scientific community presented the latest findings on various transport protocols. An intelligent networking of objects always includes the secure transmission of data, a topic to which METR also devotes itself very intensively. Image copyrights: David Marschalsky

Berlin-based companies kick off PropTech R&D Partnership, Bringing IoT Infrastructure to Tenement Housing FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE degewo netzWerk GmbH, a subsidiary of Berlin's leading residential construction company degewo, and METR, a PropTech startup in the field of smart building automation, have entered into a 2-year research and development partnership for the development of a multifunctional gateway to enable the gradual and scalable digitalization of the housing industry. The partnership is considered to form an “IoT Backbone for the Berlin Housing Industry.” It includes the joint development of an IoT infrastructure for residential buildings, which enables housing construction companies to work across manufacturers and utilities – such as water, electricity and heating. The partners aim to provide solutions for the lack of IoT infrastructure in such buildings. Three smart building applications will be developed with submetering (the remote reading of heat and water consumption) as the first application. “Universal communication structures for the Internet of Things, conceived for residential buildings, represent a great need and at the same time an enormous challenge for the housing industry. We are spearheading IoT solutions for the housing sector. Production of our M-Gate, a modern gateway to read heating consumption and report back data securely, is underway. Engineers Ravi and David are assembling M-Gates for our first customer, Berlin's largest housing company.
In December 2017, after an extensive phase of lab testing, we started our first pilot project with one of Berlin’s leading housing companies with experience in both energy and digital infrastructure. For this pilot, METR provided an IoT gateway with higher data protection to the housing company. It was a notable success: our modern devices were installed in several complex buildings and worked perfectly to read heating consumption data and securely provide data back to the billing provider. Coupled with submetering, this innovation ultimately benefits residents with fair, more efficient billing. We are excited to have such a significant housing customer at this early stage of production!
We were shortlisted from among 74 startups to pitch at the prop-tech innovation competition entitled “Smart Up The City 2017”, held at Telefónica BASECAMP. The competition, organised by one of Berlin’s leading housing associations, degewo netzWerk GmbH, unveiled promising new business models and technologies in the areas of real estate management, energy supply, building automation, mobility and communication. There were two selection rounds: during the first round, 20 out of 74 startups were invited for a first pitch. Then 5 teams were selected for the second and final round; METR was among these finalists! Ulrich Jursch, Managing Director of degewo netzWerk GmbH, declared that the selected startups had distinguished themselves with their convincing approaches to solving existing problems for housing construction companies.
